[Blog] HL Robotics Selected as ‘K-AI’ Company, to Co-Develop Sovereign AI Foundation Model with NC AI

Five elite teams have been selected to lead the development of Korea’s next-generation sovereign AI. The final list includes NC AI (with HL Robotics as a key participant), Naver Cloud, Upstage, SK Telecom, and LG AI Research under LG Management Development Institute.

[Excerpt from Ministry of Science and ICT press release]
① The selected teams have demonstrated their capability to develop sovereign-level foundation AI models. They aim to build Korea’s own foundation models from scratch, which aligns with the core objective of pursuing true sovereign AI.

② The participating teams have proposed advanced open-source policies, enabling their AI foundation models to be utilized not only by themselves but also commercially by other enterprises. This is expected to significantly contribute to the growth of Korea’s AI ecosystem, promote the development of diverse AI services, and enhance public accessibility to AI technologies.

③ Furthermore, the teams have set ambitious goals to expand beyond traditional language models. Their roadmaps include development of multimodal models, omni-models, and other advanced technologies that target global-level competitiveness in AI.

[Project Goals]

  • ▴ To develop a 200B-scale proprietary large language foundation model package with world-leading performance ▴ To develop a multimodal perception and generation foundation model package based on proprietary large language models (LLMs) ▴ To establish and provide a DomainOps framework that supports the industrial deployment and scalability of sovereign AI

  • ▴ To build domain-specific foundation models tailored for key industries such as manufacturing, retail, robotics, media, and the public sector.

* DomainOps (Domain Operations) refers to a framework for automation and optimization tailored to specific industry verticals.

[Ecosystem Impact and Future Contributions]
The project will help accelerate Korea’s AI transformation across industries through the DomainOps platform and a B2B system integration (SI) structure, targeting AI adoption in 40 demand-side enterprises.

Additionally, the foundation models will be released on Hugging Face Hub, supporting various inference frameworks and formats to maximize accessibility and device compatibility.
The project also plans to connect multimodal AI technologies with public services, helping bridge the digital divide and develop AI models for industrial safety and public service enhancement.
